Week 10 kicks off on Thursday Night Football with the New York Jets and New England Patriots as these AFC East rivals are coming off big wins last week, but with their seasons headed in two very different. The Patriots are winners of eight consecutive games and looking like the team to beat in the AFC. Meanwhile, the Jets have won their first two games of the season in back-to-back weeks.Just halfway through the season, and the Jets (2-7) are looking to play the role of spoiler against a red-hot Patriots team. Last week wasn't a pretty win, but with two big special teams touchdowns, New York was able to outscore Cleveland 27-20. If they hope to get a win against the Patriots, the Jets will need much more out of quarterback Justin Fields, as he had just 54 yards passing in Week 10.

Through 10 games, New England (8-2) has emerged as one of the best teams in the league during this seven-game winning streak. In Week 10, they went on the road to beat Tampa Bay behind a 147-yard rushing, two-touchdown breakout performance from rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson. Drake Maye continued to play with poise, adding 270 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Stats and stuff

The Jets will try for their first three-game winning streak since taking three in a row early in the 2023 season (Weeks 5, 6 and 8). ... QB Justin Fields was 6 of 11 for 54 yards, with 42 coming on the TD screen pass to Hall, against the Browns. He threw for 244 yards in the win at Cincinnati on Oct. 26, but has just 145 yards in the three games combined around that performance: 54 against Cleveland, 46 vs. Carolina and 45 vs. Denver. ... Hall’s 125 total yards against the Browns accounted for 74% of the Jets’ 169 net yards. Since 2000, he’s the only player to account for at least 74% of a team’s offense in a win, and he has done it twice, including 74.5% in the win against New England in Week 18 of the 2023 season. ... Hall’s 2,997 career yards rushing rank 12th in Jets history. ... DE Will McDonald tied Mark Gastineau (twice) and John Abraham for the team’s single-game sacks record with four last week. He also had nine QB pressures. ... The Jets limited the Browns to 20 yards passing in the second half. K Nick Folk has been perfect this season, going 19 of 19 on field goals and making all 12 of his extra points. ... The Patriots have won seven straight games, matching their longest win streak since 2021. ... A win Sunday will secure New England’s first winning season since 2021 when it finished 10-7 and qualified for the playoffs. ... A victory would also give the Patriots a 4-0 record in AFC East play, which would be their best start in the division since 2019 (5-0). ... QB Drake Maye entered the week second in the NFL to Detroit’s Jared Goff with a 71.7 completion percentage. ... Maye has completed 50-yard passes in each of the last two games. ... WR Mack Hollins had his second career 100-yard receiving game last week against the Buccaneers. ... WR Kayshon Boutte is second in the NFL to Indianapolis WR Alec Pierce (20.9) with an 18.7-yard receiving average.

The Jets defense wasn’t very good with defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and cornerback Sauce Gardner. And unsurprisingly it’s not looking much better without them. The Jets gave up back-to-back touchdowns to the Patriots to start Thursday night’s game, which they trailed 14-7 at halftime.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye converted on his first 11 passes – a career best game-opening completion streak for the MVP candidate, who is in his second year. But it was one of Maye’s incompletions late in the first half that led to the broadcast on Prime TV to point out a remarkable shortcoming for this year’s defense.

The Jets, through nine-plus games are still looking for their first interception of the season. They nearly had it late in the second quarter when Maye’s deep ball to rookie receiver Kyle Williams floated, but safety Tony Adams and cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers collided on the play and the ball fell harmlessly to the ground. Not only did the Jets fail to secure the pick, but Stiggers went to the locker room after hurting his hamstring on the play. That sequence prompted broadcasting legend Al Michaels to bring up the Jets’ remarkable lack of takeaways this season. The Jets have one through their first nine game, the fewest ever in NFL history. And that one came in London in their loss to the Broncos.

“So no domestic turnovers,” Michaels said.

And that’s right. The last Jets takeaway on American soil came last season. The broadcast also showed that no team has fewer than five turnovers through 10 games in NFL history. Barring a second-half miracle, the Jets will be the first.

It’s hard to win that way. And while the Jets are somehow staying in this game, thanks to the Patriots missed field goal at the end of the first half they started the second half within a possession. But their secondary isn’t helping much without Gardner, as former cornerback Richard Sherman pointed out during the halftime show: Jets cornerbacks allowed seven catches on seven targets for 74 yards in the first half – with Brandon Stephens, the top corner remaining after the departure of Gardner and Michael Carter II, getting burned several times.
