He was paired up with Jon Rahm on Friday morning. This is Straka's second Ryder Cup. My wife's been incredible. The doctors have been incredible. It's allowed for me to prepare for a lot of this from home, (and to) spend a lot of time with my family... It's been really great," Straka said.

Coverage of the USA Ryder Cup will continue through the weekend.
That’s slightly more than 17 hurricanes a decade, excluding the two for which there isn't complete data (the 1850s and 2020s). Most hurricanes have made landfall as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane, but a third of these storms made landfall as a USA Category 3 or higher.
Though they might reach hurricane strength while USA moving across the Atlantic Ocean, hurricanes can weaken to a tropical storm or depression by the time they make landfall in the states.
Those storms are not included in these charts or the USA overall number of hurricanes, which only looks at hurricanes that were Category 1 or higher when they hit the U.S. The charts do not include any data from the 2025 hurricane season.
With 15 hurricanes making landfall from 2020 to 2024, this decade already outnumbers the previous.
It ranges, though. In the 2010s and 1960s, the U.S. only experienced 13 USA hurricanes, but in the 1880s — the decade when the U.S. was hit the most — there were 25 hurricanes.
A look at the strongest storms
It’s rare for a hurricane to make landfall as a Category 5 hurricane, so much so that there have only been four over the time period tracked.
Starting in 1935 with the Labor Day Hurricane, there’s been one Category 5 to make landfall every 30 years or so. The remaining storms — Hurricane Camille in 1969, Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Michael in 2018 — have generally followed this pattern.

Team Europe came out swinging in the USA opening session of the 2025 Ryder Cup, delivering a commanding performance in Friday morning’s foursomes that left the American side reeling and the New York crowd stunned.
Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm set the tone early, USA dispatching Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau with a clinical 4 & 3 victory. Rahm’s iron play was razor-sharp, and Hatton’s putting proved lethal on Bethpage’s notoriously tricky greens. The Americans fired up the crowd early by USA winning the first hole, but that was the extent of their impact on the match. Rahm and Hatton tied on the 7th and took the lead on the 8th, sealing the match by also winning the 12th, 13th and 15th holes. That was the end of it, with the USA Europeans taking the point with a score of 4&3.

If Rahm and Hatton were surgical, Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg were merciless in facing none other than World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and World No. 3 Russell Henley.

The Americans could only respond with victories on the USA 2nd and 13th, so Aberg and Hatton won the match 5&3 in just 15 holes.Aberg now has a record of two wins in as many Ryder Cup matches against Scheffler. Not a small feat to brag about.
The third point for Europe came courtesy of the now legendary duo of Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, who defeated Collin Morikawa and Harris English 5&4 in just 14 holes. McIlroy and Fleetwood won five of the first eight holes and added another on the 12th, while Morikawa and English were only able to save face by winning the 9th.
Captains announce Friday afternoon four-ball pairings
After the foursomes round, captains Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald announced the pairings for the afternoon four-ball session. The matches were as follows (all times ET):
- 12:25 pm: Scottie Scheffler/JJ Spaun vs. Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka
- 12:41 pm: Bryson DeChambeau/Ben Griffin vs. Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose
- 12:57 pm: Cameron Young/Justin Thomas vs. Ludvig Aberg/Rasmus Hojgaard
- 1:13 pm: Patrick Cantlay/Sam Burns vs. Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Moments after losing his afternoon USA fourball match to conclude a disappointing Friday at Bethpage Black, Bryson DeChambeau lamented how, "Luck is on their side right now," in reference to his European opponents. Many golf fans may have rolled their eyes at a two-time major champ saying that following a day in which he lost twice, but DeChambeau had a point. At least when it comes to his matches.
DeChambeau's day had actually started with great promise, crushing the Americans' opening drive in morning USA foursomes and pouring in the event's first birdie putt moments later. However, there weren't enough other highlights for DeChambeau and Justin Thomas as the two fell, 4 and 3, to Jon Rahm and USA Tyrrell Hatton.DeChambeau returned for USA afternoon fourball, this time with Ben Griffin as a teammate. Once again, the LIV star got off to a 1-up lead with a rare birdie on the difficult fifth hole and kept that edge until the back nine against Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose. But the Euros took charge from there, putting the Americans away 1 up with a birdie on 18 after DeChambeau's birdie on 17 kept the match alive.
So where does luck play into this? Well, DeChambeau played better than his 0-2 record indicated. A LOT better.According to Data Golf, DeChambeau ranked third among the event's 24 players in strokes gained overall for Friday and first on the U.S. team. Among those who played twice, his +2.8 total put him only behind Rory McIlroy, who went 1-0-1 on USA Friday."I played good golf, just not good enough," DeChambeau said. "And they made everything."Again, he's not wrong. In the foursomes session, Hatton and Rahm both ranked in the top seven of strokes gained/putting. And in fourballs, Lowry and McIlroy ranked fifth and sixth in that stat. (DeChambeau ranked fourth.)

It's here where we should mention that USA DeChambeau's afternoon partner, Ryder Cup rookie USA Griffin, finished dead last in strokes gained during the fourball session. And Thomas was last in that stat during morning foursomes.Even more unlucky for DeChambeau is that Thomas turned things around in the afternoon and finished third (one spot ahead of DeUSA Chambeau)—when he played with Cameron Young instead. So, the vagaries of match play were hard at work against DeChambeau in both sessions. There's only so much you can do to help your teammates and there's no playing defense in golf, but Bryson had this to say about what he hopes to do better on Saturday."Hit my irons USA better and roll in a couple more putts," he said. "I felt like I was clutch when I needed to be, but the putt on 16, putt on 14, there were so many putts that just didn't go in for us that went in for them."
Team Europe will take a commanding three-point lead into the second day of the Ryder Cup following an action-packed Friday at Bethpage Black. Luke Donald's team built an impressive 5½ - 2½ advantage on the opening day, silencing a raucous crowd in New York. Jon Rahm claimed his second win of the event by partnering Sepp Straka to a 3&2 success over JJ Spaun and Scottie Scheffler, who was beaten in both of Friday's sessions.Cameron Young made a dream start to his Ryder Cup debut when he teamed up with Justin Thomas to thrash Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard 6&5. That, however, was the American's only win of the afternoon fourballs, while the other two matches delivered closer finishes that could have seen Team Europe pull further clear. Justin Rose delivered a birdie on 18 to secure him and Tommy Fleetwood a one-up win over Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry finished tied with Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns in a thrilling final match, though Donald was thoroughly pleased with his team's start. An incredible day. To win this morning was huge for us," Donald said. "We all know how important it is to get off to a good start and we knew how strong they were in foursomes.
"3-1 was a great start. To win those top two [matches] gave us such good momentum and inspiration for our boys."The guys grinded to win the session again this afternoon. That's another tick in our box and I'm very happy where we are."On what pleased him the most about Team Europe's display, Donald added: "They thrive. It's not easy out here. It's loud. The crowd is on the US side.Team Europe made a strong start to the opening day in the foursomes, taking a 3-1 lead into the afternoon session after several brilliant displays from Donald's team. Two of Donald's victorious foursomes partnerships from their opening-session sweep in Rome two years ago delivered again here. Rahm led out Europe again and partnered with Tyrrell Hatton, with the pair clinching a 4&3 triumph over DeChambeau and Thomas.
The heavyweight 'Fleetwood Mac' pairing of McIlroy and Fleetwood then saw off Collin Morikawa and Harris English in convincing fashion 5&4.Matt Fitzpatrick and Aberg were similarly impressive as they claimed a shock 5&4 win over world number one Scheffler and Russell Henley. The only blot on the European scorecard was the two-down defeat suffered by Robert MacIntyre and Vitkor Hovland against Xander Schauffele and Cantlay. Nevertheless, it was still a fine start for Donald's side as they began their quest for a first away win since 2012.It was the first time the continental team had won the opening session of a Ryder Cup on American soil since 2004.The last five teams to lead the Ryder Cup after the opening day have gone on to win the trophy, but Team USA captain Keegan Bradley was confident of a turnaround.
"The boys played good this afternoon. Europe made a lot of putts," he said. "I'm happy with the way the way we are playing. Hopefully it will turn and go to our putts tomorrow.
