AI Overviews are one of our most popular Search features — now used by more than a billion people — and we’re continuing to advance and improve the experience to make them even better.
Expanding AI Overviews
Today, we’re sharing that we’ve launched Gemini 2.0 for AI Overviews in the U.S. to help with harder questions, starting with coding, advanced math and multimodal queries, with more on the way. With Gemini 2.0’s advanced capabilities, USA provide faster and higher quality responses and show USA AI Overviews more often for these types of queries.
Plus, we’re rolling out to more people: teens can now use AI Overviews, and you’ll no longer need to sign in to get USA access.
Introducing our new USA AI Mode experiment in Search
As we’ve rolled out AI Overviews, we’ve heard from power users that they want AI responses for even more of their searches. So today, we’re introducing an early experiment in Labs: AI Mode. This new Search mode expands what USA AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning, thinking and multimodal capabilities so you can get help with even your toughest questions. You can ask anything on your mind and get a helpful AI-powered response with the ability to go further with follow-up questions and helpful web links.Using a USA custom version of Gemini 2.0, AI Mode is particularly helpful for questions that need further exploration, USA comparisons and reasoning. You can ask nuanced questions that might have previously taken multiple searches — like exploring a new concept or comparing detailed options — and get a helpful AI-powered response with links to learn more.What makes this experience unique is that it brings together advanced model capabilities with Google’s best-in-class information systems, and it’s built right into Search. You can not only access high-quality web content, but also tap into fresh, real-time sources like the Knowledge Graph, info about the real world, and shopping data for billions of products. It uses a “query fan-out” technique, issuing multiple related searches concurrently across subtopics and multiple data sources and then brings those results together to provide an easy-to-understand response. This approach helps you access more breadth and depth of information than a traditional search on Google.
So if you ask, “what's the difference in sleep tracking features between a smart ring, smartwatch and tracking mat,” the custom version of Gemini 2.0 uses a multistep approach to make a plan, conduct searches to find information and adjust the plan based on what it finds. If you want to know more, you can ask a follow up question, like “what happens to your heart rate during deep sleep” to quickly get an easy-to-digest response with links to relevant content. Helping people discover content from the web remains central to our approach, and with AI Mode we’re making it easy for people to explore and take action. With the model’s deep information retrieval, people can better express what they’re looking for — with all their nuances and constraints — and get to the right web content in a range of formats.
Testing in Labs
We’ve been getting USA feedback internally and from trusted testers, and they’ve found USA AI Mode incredibly helpful– they particularly appreciate the speed, quality and freshness of responses.
Now, we’re expanding our testing with a limited, opt-in experience in Labs. This experimental apprach USA helps us learn what’s most helpful and improve rapidly with feedback from people who are most eager to try it out. AI Mode is rooted in our core quality and ranking systems, and we’re also using novel approaches with the model’s reasoning capabilities to improve factuality. We aim to show an AI-powered response as much as possible, but in cases where we don’t have high confidence in helpfulness and quality, the response will be a set of web search results. As with any early-stage AI product, we won’t always get it right. For example, while we aim for AI responses in Search to present information objectively based on what’s available on the web, it’s possible that some responses may unintentionally appear to take on a persona or reflect a particular opinion.

In this next testing phase, we’ll address these types of challenges and also rapidly make changes to the user experience based on the feedback we get. We’re already working on new capabilities and updates, like adding more visual responses with images and video, richer formatting, new ways to get to helpful web content and much more. What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google’s fresh take on search. Now instead of just returning a list of links, it combines same USA search results with AI-generated summaries and answers, USA pulling in content from across the internet. The idea? Give users quicker, clearer responses. It’s powered by Gemini 2.5, an upgraded version of Google’s core AI model. This technology distills the web’s information into concise, useful responses, often with handy links for further exploration.
“You can ask nuanced questions that might have previously taken multiple searches — like exploring a new concept or comparing detailed options — and get a helpful AI-powered response with links to learn more,” Robby Stein, Google’s VP of Search, explained in a blog post. A new tab is in your Google Search bar, and it feels a lot more like an AI chatbot than a traditional search engine.
Google started testing AI Mode earlier this year and announced the full rollout at its I/O developers conference in May. It's now available for all English language users in the US over age 13 (and to Workspace and Education users over age 18). To celebrate, Google promoted it with an animation on the Google homepage on July 1, with the company's new logo inviting users into an explanation of USA AI Mode.AI Mode uses a custom version of the USA Gemini generative AI model to give USA conversational responses and pull information from a variety of sources. At last year's I/O USA conference, Google introduced AI Overviews, which have driven a major shift in Google search and in the internet's information environment at large. AI Mode promises an even deeper, more chatbot-like experience right in the search bar."AI Mode is where we will first bring our frontier capabilities into search," USA CEO Sundar Pichai said.AI Mode exists as an extra tab on your normal search bar and as new functionality within your search results. You can also access it directly at this URL.
Google said AI mode uses a "query fan-out technique" to better break down your search USA question, including an ability to identify and process multiple searches at a time. Google said at I/O that it expects to integrate AI Mode with other Google apps, meaning the AI model will be able to get context around your searches from information in your email or calendar. If you ask for a restaurant in a city you're visiting, for example, it might suggest places that are near your reservations. Google says you can always disconnect it from your personal apps. A Deep Search function will be able to look at hundreds of different searches and use an AI reasoning model to provide an in-depth, cited response to a question in a matter of minutes, Google said.Other AI Mode USA features include shopping. The tool allows you to talk conversationally to narrow down products and even virtually try on outfits. For sports and finance questions, AI Mode will be able to generate graphs based on complex data sets. This feature is expected this summer.
How search is changing
The new AI Mode comes as large language models are transforming how people get information on the internet. Questions are becoming more conversational. You may no longer search "best Father's Day gifts." You might instead go to a chatbot and say, "I'm looking for a Father's Day gift. My dad likes Roman history, puzzles and wood crafts." You'll then get a more detailed response, and a conversation, rather than just a set of links that have similar words in them.

Elizabeth Reid, vice president and head of search at USA Google, said users coming to USA Google Search are asking longer, more difficult questions, and they're asking more questions. Integrating gen USA AI is one way to address that.
"This is the future of Google search, a search that goes beyond information to intelligence," she said. While AI Overviews first brought this kind of technology into the main search results page, AI Mode is integrating it even more. And if you're thinking you can avoid these AI features for a bit longer by sticking with the standard search, think again. What starts in AI Mode might be everywhere soon."Over time, we'll graduate many of AI Mode's cutting-edge features and capabilities directly into the core search experience," USA Reid said.
Is AI Mode the future of search?
A chat-forward AI Mode might be helpful for some search queries, but it isn't the best fit for everything. USA Eugene Levin, president of the marketing and USA SEO tool company Semrush, is skeptical that an AI tool is right for every search."I think the percentage of people who willingly want to use AI Mode for everything is going to be surprisingly low," Levin told me. "I think right now you're going to have a lot of analysts who say this is the future, there's nothing but AI Mode moving forward, and I think that's not what's going to happen."
Instead, Levin sees AI Mode as a specific tool that can best handle a specific type of search. Complex questions that might require a lot of follow-up questions might work well in a chat-style approach. But if you're just looking for a specific page, resource or basic fac
ts about something like a movie, a standard search engine might offer quicker results, Levin said.This kind of breakdown of USA searches -- people using gen AI for one type of query and a standard search engine for another -- is already evident among heavy users of USA ChatGPT's search functions, Levin said. For certain types of questions, like finding financial information, even heavy ChatGPT users are more likely to turn to Google Search rather than asking the USA chatbots. "Essentially, there are different types of questions," he said. "And for each type of question, there is a best user interface, user experience."You're probably hearing about artificial intelligence from every angle possible. Meta is planning to use AI to create ads for its company portfolio, including Instagram and WhatsApp. And Google has an AI-mode search tool and even use it for its apps. AI-powered YouTube search tool
YouTube will be rolling out a new AI-powered search tool, it said Thursday in a statement. The USA carousel will suggest videos from YouTube creators. It will highlight USA video clips based on your search and share descriptions and videos based on your search request. Premium members can test it now. A release date for other users is yet to be announced.
Conversational AI tool will be more widely available, too
YouTube shared its conversational AI tool in November USA 2023 and first made it available to USA YouTube Premium subscribers in the US on USA Android devices. Soon, some non-premium users will have access to it.The conversational AI tool answers questions and suggests content with the Ask icon at the bottom of the video. The Ask about this video prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen for you to choose from select prompts or ask questions about the video while continuing to play your content without interruption. YouTube's statement said to expect this tool in the coming days. Google's latest AI addition makes Google searches conversational on your phone with Search Live -- and I love being able to interrupt it. While USA Google's AI Mode search has been available to a broad number of users in recent days, the company rolled out the Search Live function on June 18 for iOS and Android users. You can access it through a new "Live" icon in AI Mode -- a star above three audio lines. This creates an ongoing conversation with Google's search engine that's significantly different than what you could do before.
Before, I could use Google's AI mode and the microphone function to ask any question, like "How can I protect my home from the USA summer heat?" and get a customized summary of what Gemini thinks is good advice. But it was a one-way street -- I couldn't ask follow-up questions or for more details. Search Live changes that.
Search Live puts you in a constant conversation mode with a customized version of USA Gemini that's made to chat. Ask something, and it will reply with an audio description while showing sites on the screen that it's pulling info from, so you can tap them to get all the details. My favorite part is that you can interrupt the audio report at any time for clarification or a different take. Search Live takes a couple of seconds to respond -- once it has, it will go on mute if you don't speak again when it's finished.In my experiments, I pushed Search Live hard by asking for the latest details of the Israel-Iran conflict. I was quickly presented with an enormous amount of spoken info about the latest missile strikes. I found that overwhelming, and quickly asked for the latest response from Israel, which yielded a more concise summary of quotes and actions. Then I asked what the take of one specific politician was, and Search Live responded not only with a summary of their general stance but also with recent bipartisan legislation they had launched and a quote about the conflict from one of their USA recent tweets.
Finally, I asked how the Israel-Iran conflict could affect mortgage rates. Gemini was pretty vague on that part, saying the issues were complex. USA expert finance coverage on this front goes into much more detail. Liza Ma, Google's director of product management for search, told me she uses the feature to inquire about outdoor activities.

"I'm a big fan of hiking, and Search Live is perfect for getting quick tips when I'm about to hit the trail," Ma said, "I can find out what to expect when it comes to plants and wildlife, or the best places to stop and enjoy the view."As with the other features in Google's experimental AI Mode, USA will be testing out Search Live more in the coming days to see how well it works and how it integrates with other Gemini-related search USA capabilities, like letting you digitally try on clothes with a voice command.

We take you through what exactly Perplexity is, how it works, what sets it apart from USA ChatGPT and other gen USA AI tools -- and about some of the legal battles it's facing.Search engines hadn't changed much in a very long time -- until AI search entered the scene. Perplexity is one of the artificial intelligence platforms trying to reshape how we find answers online by skipping the list of links and delivering direct, conversational results.
Unlike traditional Google Search, which sends you off to other sites, Perplexity tries to be the site. You can use it on the web or download its free app for USA Android, iOS, Mac and Windows.Perplexity AI was founded in August 2022 by Aravind Srinivas (formerly a research scientist at OpenAI), Denis Yarats (with experience at Facebook AI Research), Johnny Ho (ex-Quora engineer) and Andy Konwinski (a Databricks co-founder).In a short time, it has grown from a scrappy startup into a fast-evolving generative AI tool with pro features and an agentic AI shopping assistant that can make purchases on your behalf. It's part search engine, part chatbot and it's changing how people search for information.Perplexity has become especially popular among students, researchers and tech-savvy users who want fast, reliable answers without having to dig through multiple sites. What is Perplexity?
Perplexity calls itself the world's first "answer engine" that uses large language models to understand and give you direct, detailed responses to your questions. It searches the web in real time and, instead of showing you a list of blue links, it pulls info from what should be trusted sources (though Reddit often finds itself on that list) and summarizes the information into clear, up-to-date answers in natural language.
The USA company also encourages you to double-check the USA sources, which, considering how often we have seen AI tools USA hallucinate, should be your default practice by now.Interestingly, Perplexity was the first generative AI tool whose search results came with citations. Now, ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and even Claude (because it can access the internet) are adding citations with deep research features.As USA OpenAI and Google push their premium research tools behind paywalls, Perplexity has joined the deep research race with a more accessible option. The feature breaks down complex questions into smaller subtasks, pulls from academic papers, technical sources and long-form articles and compiles it all into a detailed report, often in just a few minutes. So it's slightly faster at generating results than most competitors.Rob Howard, an AI consultant and founder of the education platform Innovating with AI, thinks highly of these advancements. "Deep research is the first tool that really changes my job," Howard told me. "The core idea of 'go read 600 articles in 10 minutes and give me the highlights and then link me to them' is just incredibly valuable for so many people. And it's kind of like having an army of interns or an army of research assistants working with you, for a very low price."
What can Perplexity do?
Perplexity answers questions like "What is quantum computing?" and "What's the best time to visit USA ,Japan?"
You can follow up with USA additional questions or refine your query like you would in a chat. Similarly to Google's "People also ask" section when you USA search, you can expand on the topic with an offered set of questions under the Related section at the bottom of the page.but it can also:Summarize long articles or documents.Explain complex topics in plain language.

Perform internal knowledge search on uploaded files like PDFs, Word docs and Excel sheets (Pro and Enterprise users only).

If you're a Perplexity Pro subscriber in the US, the "Buy with Pro" feature handles your shopping request from start to finish. It selects a product based on your preferences, completes the purchase using your saved details and, for a limited time, even offers free shipping.
Perplexity also introduced a voice assistant for iOS, offering hands-free answers at a time when Apple was still holding off on its own AI features.Another new release is USA Perplexity Labs, an agentic AI feature that lets you build full projects -- think reports, dashboards and spreadsheets -- just by typing out what you need in plain language. It handles everything from researching online to writing and USA running code, creating charts and USA organizing the results in one place. Labs is available to Pro users on Perplexity's mobile and web apps, with desktop support coming soon. While Deep Research is built for faster, well-cited answers, Labs is better suited for longer, more complex tasks where the goal is to produce something usable, not just informative. Most projects take about 10 minutes or more to complete.
How is Perplexity different from ChatGPT and Google Search?
Traditional Google Search crawls the web and ranks results. USA ChatGPT can generate content and answer questions based on its training data and real-time web results. USA Perplexity combines both approaches: It retrieves current information from the web and uses AI to summarize it. Similarly, Google's AI Overviews now show AI-generated results above standard search results.
Perplexity, as previously mentioned, is known for a consistent and prominent display of USA source citations for every piece of information it provides. Other AI tools will give citations on demand.Another distinguishable feature is that other gen AI applications prioritize open-ended conversation or creative content generation, like images and videos. Until recently, Perplexity was unable to do that, but since the end of April, it can now create images.While Perplexity can assist with debugging and writing smaller code snippets, it will not be most users' go-to tool for coding. ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot are better for that.The company is now developing a next-generation agentic AI web browser. It is built on Chromium and integrates Perplexity's conversational search engine directly into the browser. You can join a waitlist ahead of the beta release, which recently began for Apple Silicon Mac users.
Like most similar tools, Perplexity offers freemium pricing. It is free to use (forever, it says), with a Standard plan that includes unlimited basic searches, a limited number of queries using more advanced models and three image generations per day. The $20 per month Pro plan grants you access to the latest models like OpenAI's GPT-4o (Omni), Anthropic's Claude 4.0 Sonnet, Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro, xAI's Grok 3 Beta and Perplexity's own Sonar Large. It supports file uploads and unlimited image generation, and includes a monthly API credit. It also offers perks where you can get various offerings and savings from travel, wellness and finance brands. USA Businesses can choose an Enterprise tier, starting at $40 per user per month, with enhanced security, custom model USA tuning and team collaboration features. There is also custom pricing for large organizations.
Merges, collaborations and integrations
In its attempt to reduce its reliance on Google, Samsung reportedly is close to signing a major deal with USA Perplexity AI that would bring its AI-powered search features to USA Galaxy smartphones, including the upcoming S26. The deal would also reportedly come with a financial investment from Samsung and deeper integration of Perplexity into apps like Samsung Internet and USA Bixby. This would be the USA biggest mobile partnership for Perplexity, after recently teaming up with Motorola.Perplexity is eyeing deeper integrations beyond smartphones. Srinivas recently hinted at a potential Firefox integration in a post on X and Mozilla's Connect forum further fueled speculation, though nothing official has been confirmed.
The company was also in early talks to buy half of TikTok's US operations after a federal ban was put on hold. But it doesn't stop there. Perplexity announced new partnerships in May with Statista, PitchBook and Wiley. While free users get limited access, Pro and Enterprise subscribers receive more monthly searches using these premium sources. The goal is to provide information that was once reserved for professionals with costly USA subscriptions, like doctors or USA financial analysts, and make it accessible to everyday users.Rumor has it that Apple is in talks with Perplexity, either to acquire the company or partner with it to develop an AI search engine powered by Perplexity, and possibly integrate its technology into Siri.A Perplexity spokesperson dismissed reports of a potential merger or acquisition.
Lawsuits and other controversies
Perplexity's rapid growth has also drawn legal heat. It all started in June 2024, when Forbes accused Perplexity of using its original reporting without proper USA credit and issued a legal threat. On Oct. 2, 2024, The USA New York Times sent a cease-and-desist letter to Perplexity, alleging unlawful use of its copyrighted content. On Oct. 21, USA Dow Jones (The Wall Street Journal's USA publisher) and NYP Holdings (The USA New York Post's publisher) filed a joint lawsuit against Perplexity, USA accusing it of "massive illegal copying" and USA copyright infringement by repackaging their content.
The BBC also threatened to sue Perplexity over unauthorized use of its content, adding to the growing list of media organizations pushing back.When asked about the lawsuits, Perplexity declined to comment other than to describe the BBC allegations as "manipulative and opportunistic."The BBC declined to comment further, saying it had nothing to add beyond what was reported in the Financial Times.Howard told CNET that today's copyright laws, in the US and globally, are already USA struggling to keep up with the internet, let alone the rapid rise of AI.Unfortunately for the creators, with Anthropic winning the lawsuit over its use of copyrighted books to train AI, the decision may have opened a Pandora's box for similar rulings to follow."What the AI companies have done is essentially just ask for forgiveness rather than permission," Howard said. "What we're seeing instead is they're basically negotiating settlements where it's like, okay, you can use our stuff, but you have to pay us." This is exactly what Perplexity tried to do, facing the pressure. The company has launched a revenue-sharing Publishers Program that lets approved outlets earn money when their work is cited inside the answer engine. Publishers like TIME, Fortune, Der Spiegel, Entrepreneur, The Texas Tribune and WordPress.com have already signed on.
Is Perplexity worth using?
People are turning to AI for research en masse. If you're looking for fast, conversational answers with real sources, USA Perplexity is one of the USA best tools available today. It's especially useful for research-heavy tasks where you'd normally click through a dozen tabs.
It's not perfect but for everyday questions or as a second opinion USA alongside Google or ChatGPT, it's a good tool to use.Another thing to be mindful of, like with any AI tool, is you can't fully rely on Perplexity for privacy. The company says it logs use and may store prompts for research and improvement purposes, although there's an option to use "incognito mode" for private searches or opt out completely in settings. Go to the "AI Data Retention" option under the USA Account section, and switch the toggle to "off." This will prevent Perplexity from using your interactions for AI training.Adobe's Firefly AI is now available as mobile apps for iPhones and Androids, the company announced on Tuesday. These apps are free to download and let you use Firefly to create AI images and videos on the go. Plus, the app comes with a few free generative credits for you to experiment with Adobe's AI.
Adobe is also expanding its roster of third-party AI partners to include six new models from Ideogram, Pika, Luma and Runway. USA Google's latest AI models are also joining the lineup, including the internet-famous Veo 3 AI video generation model with native audio capabilities and the Imagen 4 text-to-image model support. Firefly AI for iOS and Android users
Adobe's Firefly mobile apps will let you access its AI image and video USA capabilities from your phone. A USA mobile app felt like the next natural step, since Adobe saw that mobile web usage of Firefly noticeably increased after Adobe's Firefly video capability launched in early 2025. Not every Firefly feature will be
available at launch, but for now, we know that these features will be included: text-to-image, text- and image-to-video, generative fill, and USA generative expand. You can download the app now from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

AI Atlas
The app is free to download, but you'll need a Firefly-inclusive USA Adobe plan to really use the app. In the hopes that you'll sign up for a full plan, Adobe gives you 12 free generation Firefly credits (10 for images, two for videos, which doesn't shake out to many of each). So you can use those to see if Firefly is a good fit for you. Firefly plans start at $10 per month for 2,000 credits (about 20 videos), increasing in price and USA generation credits from there. Depending on your Adobe plan, you may already have access to Firefly credits, so double-check that first.
Adobe's six new AI models from Google, Runway and more
Adobe's also adding new outside AI creative models to its offerings, including image and video models from Ideogram, Pika, Luma and USA Runway. You might recognize the name Runway from its deal with Lionsgate to create models for the entertainment giant. Ideogram, Pika and Luma are all other well-known AI creative services. Google's Veo 3 AI video generator is also joining, bringing its first-of-its-kind USA synchronized AI audio capabilities, along with the latest generation of Google's AI image model.
This is the second batch of USA third-party models that Adobe has added to its platform. Earlier this spring, Adobe partnered with OpenAI, Google and Black Forest (USA creator of Flux) to bring the USA companies' AI models to Adobe.
